Spotify Audiobooks launches publishing program

Spotify is further investing in audiobooks. Late last week, the audio giant announced the launch of a new publishing program for authors. This initiative allows independent authors to submit short-form stories for audiobook creation and potential publishing on Spotify.

“Spotify Audiobooks is thrilled to be opening submissions for short-form content written by independent authors who are as passionate about audiobooks as we are,” said Leah Kleynhans, Spotify Audiobooks Producer. “We know Spotify users will love exploring these intense, bite-sized listens, and expanding our audiobooks catalog in this way gives fans even more choice in the content they love to consume on our platform.”

The new program is a global initiative, allowing any author with an English-language short-form story and control over their audio rights to submit. If Spotify moves forward with a submission, it will publish the audiobook—covering an advanced payment and royalties, overseeing all aspects of production, and handling distribution to major audiobook retailers.

Spotify stated that it is specifically seeking stories in three genres: romance, mystery/thriller, and sci-fi/fantasy, while also encouraging cross-genre works. Stories should be approximately 10,000–20,000 words, and submissions will be selected on a rolling basis.

This expansion positions Spotify to compete more directly with audiobook giant Audible, which offers its subscribers access to Audible Originals and exclusives—many of which are also shorter books and stories.

SkyShowtime announces new Swedish original series

Yesterday, SkyShowtime announced a brand-new original series from director, writer, and actor Felix Herngren. Where the Sun Always Shines is a dark Swedish comedy-drama filmed in Mallorca, Spain, and will premiere on SkyShowtime later this year.

The series follows a Swedish family that has moved to Spain to enjoy an eternal vacation. However, their lives take an unexpected turn during a birthday party, where chaos ensues. The cast includes Per Larsson, Lisa Linnertorp, Rakel Wärmländer, and Erik “Jerka” Johansson, among others.

Series creator and director Felix Herngren shared his inspiration for the show: “Many dream of a new life in the sun – and so did my family and I. After just a week in our new country, Spain, the idea for this series began to take shape. There were so many life stories, dreams, and fascinating cultural clashes to turn into drama and comedy. And I’m especially happy that SkyShowtime wanted to develop it with us.”

Kai Finke, Chief Content Officer at SkyShowtime, added: “We are thrilled to have the SkyShowtime Original series Where the Sun Always Shines launching later this year. Featuring a superbly talented cast and with Felix Herngren at the helm, I have no doubt this fantastic dramedy series will be a treat for audiences. SkyShowtime’s ongoing commitment to providing its members with local storytelling means we get to partner with the best creative talent in Europe, both in front of and behind the camera. It has been a privilege to work alongside Felix and this stellar cast.”

Where the Sun Always Shines is produced by the Scandinavian production company FLX. Felix Herngren serves as creator and director, with Sussan Treschow as producer. SkyShowtime and SVT are co-producers. Head scriptwriter Maria Nygren is joined by scriptwriter Josefin Johansson, while Jessica Ericstam serves as Executive Producer for FLX.

DAZN secures global free-to-air deal with LIV Golf

Last month, the fourth season of the LIV Golf League kicked off. Launched in 2021 and backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, LIV Golf has disrupted traditional golf with its entertainment-focused approach. The league has attracted top players like Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka, with contracts reportedly worth USD 300 million and USD 130 million, respectively, according to Fox Sports.

Now, LIV Golf has entered a multi-year agreement with sports streaming service DAZN. Under this deal, LIV Golf League will be available free-to-air, ad-supported in more than 200 markets on DAZN’s platform. DAZN will also launch a dedicated LIV Golf hub, offering live broadcasts, archived footage, and behind-the-scenes content. In the future, DAZN and LIV Golf plan to introduce a premium subscription service with enhanced content and features.

The viewing interest for LIV Golf is rather low in the Nordics. In 2024, around 260,000 people aged 15–74 in the region expressed interest in watching LIV Golf on TV or online, according to Mediavision’s Sports Analysis 2024. Later this spring, an updated edition of the report will be published, providing fresh insights into the Nordic sports market and key video consumption trends. Stay tuned!
