Amedia acquires Berlingske Media
Yesterday, the Norwegian media group Amedia announced its acquisition of the Danish media house Berlingske Media. The company was purchased from the Belgian media company DPG Media, which has owned it since 2015. Berlingske is a leading Danish media house which owns the brands Berlingske, B.T., Weekendavisen, and Euroinvestor.
Anders Opdahl, CEO of Amedia, emphasized the importance of this acquisition: “Nordic media companies face tougher global competition and profound digital shifts, battling tech giants for revenue and distribution. In this challenging landscape, news media’s purpose – to foster vibrant democracy through free speech and independent journalism – becomes increasingly difficult to fulfill. That’s why I believe closer cooperation is crucial moving forward, making Amedia and Berlingske Media a perfect fit.”
Opdahl added: “We see significant opportunities for cross-border knowledge exchange and synergies. This agreement lets us export our expertise as a front-runner in digital newspaper development. We strengthen our position and Norwegian operations while reaching new audiences and ensuring Berlingske Media’s sustainability in Denmark.”
Prior to the acquisition, Amedia had no operations in Denmark. However, it now immediately becomes one of the largest newspaper publishers in the Danish market, surpassed only by JP/Politikens Hus and JFM. This acquisition represents a strategic opportunity for Amedia to strengthen its position in the Nordic media market.

NRK and TV 2 announce new sports rights agreement
The two Norwegian public broadcasters, NRK and TV 2, have been sharing sports rights for some time. They have now announced a new partnership that includes changes to the distribution of the 2025 Ski World Championships and the 2026 Football World Cup. Under the new agreement, NRK will broadcast an increased number of matches from the 2026 Men’s Football World Cup, while TV 2 has secured the TV rights to the final three days of the Ski World Championships in Trondheim in 2025.
“This agreement came about as part of a larger discussion and ensures an even distribution of the football World Cup in 2026. This is a good agreement for NRK. We believe that it will be very good for the audience that both NRK and TV 2 are investing heavily in these two championships” , commented Runar Østmo, Head of rights at NRK.
Vegard Jansen Hagen, Sports Editor at TV 2 is also satisfied with the new agreement: “The collaboration between TV 2 and NRK on sports rights is positive and something we have substantial experience with. Norway is a small country, and cooperation is essential in a competitive rights market. The Ski World Championships in Trondheim and the Football World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico are major events that viewers hold high expectations for. Now, both NRK and we must strive to deliver the best possible experience for viewers across Norway.”
Under the new agreement, NRK has secured the rights to broadcast half of the matches from the 2026 Football World Cup. The final allocation of matches between NRK and TV 2 will be determined after the match schedule is released in December 2025. The Ski World Championships in Trondheim will begin on February 26 next year. NRK will broadcast the events on NRK1 and NRK TV until TV 2 takes over. In addition, the public can listen to all competitions from Trondheim on NRK Radio.

Australia passes bill of social media age limit
Australia’s decision to introduce a new age limit for social media use has sparked an intensive debate this fall. Late last week, the government voted in favor of the legislation, which bans social media usage for all children under the age of 16. This groundbreaking law will be the first of its kind globally and is set to come into effect within a year.
Neither parents nor children who violate the new rules will face penalties. Instead, the responsibility falls on tech companies to ensure minors are not able to use their services. Companies that fail to prevent young people from creating accounts risk fines of up to AUD 49.5 million (approximately EUR 30.5 million).
Exactly what platforms will be covered by the new law has not yet been officially announced. Another unanswered question is how the age ban will be implemented technically. While the Australian government has not yet given any clarification, the law specifies that users will not be required to verify their age using ID documents.
In the Nordics, video consumption on social media has surged over the past few years. Mediavision’s analysis shows that social media platforms collectively achieved a daily video reach of 30 percent in the Nordics during the fall of 2024. This marks an increase of more than 50 percent compared to the same period last year.

Insight Nordic TV & StreamingThis analysis covers both the TV- and streaming markets in the Nordic countries. It rests on three pillars: the consumers, the market, and the actors. Analyzing the consumers takes us far – but not all the way. Studying the actors and the market as a whole is just as important. |
