STREAMING

Viaplay launches a new HVOD subscription: Viaplay Total

HVOD (hybrid; ad-supported and consumer-paid streaming subscriptions) has surged over the past year. In the Nordics, eight of the ten largest streaming services now offer HVOD subscription tiers.

Viaplay introduced its first HVOD subscription, Films & Series with Advertising, in Denmark this past summer, shortly after making it available in all Nordic countries. Now, Viaplay is expanding its HVOD offering, introducing an ad-supported tier for its premium service, Viaplay Total.

“By listening to our customers, we strive to meet their wishes and needs. With this ad-supported package, we want to offer a competitive sports package at a lower price with our exclusive and sought-after sports range. With this affordable package, Viaplay becomes accessible and relevant to an even larger audience. After the launch of our first HVOD package Viaplay Film & Series with advertising, Viaplay Total with advertising is a natural next step and strengthens our offer even further, says Christian Albeck, co-CEO of Viaplay Group in Sweden.

As of now, this new tier that includes all of Viaplay’s content is only available in Sweden. The price is SEK 649 per month, or SEK 599 per month with a 12-month binding period (without advertising SEK 699 per month.

SOCIAL MEDIA

TikTok banned from operating in Canada

Canada’s federal government has ordered the closure of Tiktok’s operations in Canada, citing national security risks. Specifically, this includes the company’s offices in Toronto and Vancouver. However, the risks do not extend to the app itself. Canadians can still download, use, and create content for Tiktok, and businesses can still advertise on the platform.

“The decision to order the shutdown was made on advice from the security and intelligence community”, Canada’s Innovation, Science and Industry Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, said in a statement.

“The government is not blocking Canadians’ access to the Tiktok application or their ability to create content. The decision to use a social media application or platform is a personal choice”, Champagne said.

In response to the Canadian government’s order to dissolve its operations in Canada, Tiktok stated:

“Shutting down TikTok’s Canadian offices and destroying hundreds of well-paying local jobs is not in anyone’s best interest, and today’s shutdown order will do just that. We will challenge this order in court. The TikTok platform will remain available for creators to find an audience, explore new interests and for businesses to thrive.”
