Mediavision: Growing demand for local content in the Nordics
According to Mediavision’s latest Content Analysis, there is a growing demand for locally produced content among Nordic streaming viewers. In fact, consumer demand for local content is significantly higher than the supply available in the Nordics. With the past year’s economic downturn taking its toll on many local media companies, this gap is at risk to increase as local content productions are cut.

EARNINGS
The Q4 earnings season continues
A few Q4 reports have been presented this past week, here are a some of the highlights:
- Disney reported better-than-expected Q4 earnings last week, as the media giant cut costs while revenue stagnated.
- Revenues for the fourth quarter were comparable to the prior-year quarter at USD 23.5 billion.
- Disney+ core subscribers dropped by 1.3 million from the prior quarter due to price increases, but the company saw a rise in average revenue per user because of those subscription cost hikes.
- Disney shares rose around 7% in extended trading following the report.
- Swedish digital magazine subscription service Readly reported profit in Q4, which reduces the loss for the full year of 2023.
- Readly’s total revenues in Q4 amounted to SEK 174.2 million, an increase of 11.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2022.
- Adjusted operating profit (EBITDA) amounted to SEK 14.5 million, compared to SEK -12.1 million in Q4 2022.
- The number of fully paying subscribers increased by 2.7% YOY from 452,466 to 464,494 at the end of the fourth quarter.

Viaplay completes recapitalization plan and sells several titles
Last Friday, the Viaplay group announced the completion of its recapitalization plan. This means a capital injection of SEK 4 billion into the company, resulting in Canal+ and PPF becoming the largest shareholders, each holding approximately 29 percent of the shares.
As Viaplay continue to cut costs, the company have recently sold several of its fiction titles to different streaming services. The latest deal was made with Amazon Prime Video, which has acquired nine Nordic fiction series from Viaplay. The titles include five Norwegian series, two Danish and two Swedish titles.
Two weeks ago, three series and two movies from Viaplay was made available on Netflix. All titles are Swedish, except the Norwegian comedy series Pörni. This is also the only title which is still available on Viaplay, the remaining titles are now solely available on Netflix. Just before the turn of the year, it was also announced that Netflix will take over Viaplay’s Swedish series Ronja The robber’s daughter. Skyshowtime will be taking over the Swedish series Veronika.
