Netflix & Viaplay join TV 2 Denmark in halt of new Danish productions
In response to an agreement entered in January 2022 aimed at increasing payment to Danish actors and actresses, Netflix has paused production of Danish movies and series. At the moment two (unnamed) projects are affected. According to Danish newspaper Politiken, the streaming giant announced its intentions in a letter to its Danish partners last week.
Monday, news broke that Viaplay will also suspend productions in Denmark. In an open letter, Viaplay’s Content EVP & Chief Content Officer Filippa Wallestam says that “Until we have reached a sustainable agreement, however, we see no other way than to put the development of further Danish projects on hold”.
Both Netflix and Viaplay thereby join TV2 Denmark in halting new productions in Denmark – which paused its production of fictional series and films already in March.
Meanwhile, Netflix has recently presented two new, upcoming, Swedish original productions: ‘Deliver me’ which is a series based on Malin Persson Giolito’s novel, and the producers of ‘Quicksand’ will produce the series ‘Barracuda Queens’.

PIRACY
Mediavision: 3.4 million pirates in the Nordics
In March 2019, one of three operators behind the pirate streaming operation “Dreambox” was sentenced to jail for seven years and four months after being found guilty of supplying illegal streaming devices. Trading under the names Dreambox (unincorporated), Dreambox TV Limited, and Digital Switchover Limited, the three men provided illegal access to Premier League football to more than 1 000 pubs, clubs and homes throughout England and Wales. This week, the judge at Warwick Crown Court ordered the operator to either forfeit the proceeds of his criminal activities and pay back close to GDP 1 million within three months, or see his prison sentence extended by an additional 6 years and 8 months.
Though measures are being taken against operators, piracy is still widespread. Recent figures from Mediavision show that 17% of all people 15-74 years old in the Nordics have illegally streamed or downloaded films and TV episodes in the past month. However, the figures vary between the countries. Piracy in Sweden is highest at 20% and lowest in Finland and Denmark, both at 13%. In total this amounts to approximately 3.4 million pirates in the Nordics, which is approximately 0.5 million more than last year.
