Mediavision: Podcast listening sets new record in Sweden
More people in Sweden are listening to podcasts. In the fourth quarter of 2024, the number of daily listeners was 20 percent higher than the previous year. Nearly two million people now listen to podcasts an average day, setting a new record. This is presented in Mediavision’s latest analysis of the Swedish audio market.
During the fourth quarter of 2024, nearly two million 15–74-year-olds listened to podcasts an average day in Sweden. This indicates strong growth in podcast listenership over the past year, with an increase of 20 percent. Compared to 2022, growth is even bigger. This trend shows that podcast listening continues to set new records, as people shift from traditional radio listening. Mediavision also notes that growth is widespread, with a significant increase across most of the age groups analyzed.

EARNINGS
Q4 reports from the past week
Fourth quarter reports keep coming in from the media industry. Here are a few of the highlights from this past week:
Amazon
- Amazon reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue for the fourth quarter, but gave poor guidance for the current period, making the stock fall more than 5% in extended trading.
- Net sales increased 10% to USD 187.8 billion in the fourth quarter, compared to USD 170.0 billion in fourth quarter 2023.
- Operating income increased to USD 21.2 billion in the fourth quarter, compared to USD 13.2 billion in fourth quarter 2023.
- Amazon’s advertising revenue increased 18% to USD 17.3 billion.
Disney
- Disney’s revenues increased 5% YOY to USD 24.7 billion from USD 23.5 billion the same period last year.
- Disney’s net income increased nearly 23% to USD 2.64 billion, or UDS 1.40 per share, from USD 2.15 billion or USD 1.04 per share, during the corresponding quarter last year.
- The company’s streaming business reported another quarter of profitability despite a 1% decline in subscribers for Disney+, totalling at 124.6 million. Total Hulu subscriptions rose 3% during the period to 53.6 million.
Sanoma
- Sanoma Group’s net sales amounted to EUR 241.5 million in Q4 2024, a -5% decrease YOY, from EUR 253.4 million in Q4 2023.
- The media segment also decreased by -5% YOY in net sales, from EUR153.1 in Q4 2023 to EUR 145 in Q4 2024. The drop was explained by lower TV and print advertising sales and divestments, while subscription sales continued to grow.
- Sanoma noted that growth in digital subscriptions was driven by the SVOD service Ruutu+, where the subscription base reached its all-time-high. The exact number of the subscriber base was not announced, though.
- In 2025, Sanoma expects that the Group’s reported net sales will be EUR 1.28‒1.33 billion, compared to EUR 1.34 million in 2024.
Storytel
- Storytel Group’s revenue exceeded one billion SEK for the first time in a single quarter, growing 9% YOY to 1,028 MSEK in Q4 2024. The increase was driven by solid growth in both the streaming and the publishing segments.

SPORTS
Viaplay to introduce specialized football subscriptions in Denmark
Viaplay and other streaming providers have faced criticism for offering too extensive and expensive sports subscription packages. For consumers interested in only a specific team or league, this often means paying for a wide range of sporting events they have no interest in. Viaplay has recognized this issue and is now set to launch two new sports subscription packages in Denmark.
Last week, Viaplay announced the upcoming launch at a press conference. The two new packages are focusing on football: one offers domestic football, while the other offers the UEFA Champions League.
“We are well aware that many Danes are only interested in certain parts of our sports offerings. We must acknowledge that we have not been reaching them effectively. That is why we are introducing more tailored products and launching these two packages,” said Sine Smith-Jensen, Senior Vice President at Viaplay’s commercial division in Denmark, during the press conference, as reported by Ekstra Bladet.
Both packages are priced at DKK 299 per month. The first package gives access to Danish football, including the Superligaen, Nordic Bet Ligaen, and Pokalturneringen, along with access to series and films. The second package includes full Champions League coverage, as well as series and films, but does not include Danish or English football.
For those who want access to both Danish football and the Champions League, Viaplay offers the Premium package for DKK 499 per month. This package is also required for viewers who want to watch the English Premier League and other sports, such as Formula 1.
The new packages are set to be launched sometime before summer, though an exact date has yet to be announced.

Sports AnalysisThis analysis covers both the TV- and streaming markets in Sweden. It rests on three pillars: the consumers, the market, and the actors. Analysing the consumers takes us far – but not all the way. Studying the actors and the market as a whole is just as important. |
