COMPANY REPORTS

Earnings season continues

This week the earnings season peaks as we get results from many of the leading actors in the business. Here is a recap of what’s been reported so far.

Telia

  • Telia Company’s net sales increased 5.6% to SEK 22.456 million (21.271) and like for like, net sales increased 2.7%.
  • Profit before tax of SEK 2.404 million for the third quarter of 2022 – compared to SEK 1.957 million for the corresponding period in 2021.
  • Looking forward, Telia lowers its outlook for earnings growth in 2022 and 2023 due of increased energy costs. “The increase in energy costs for the full year 2022 is estimated at around SEK 900 million, which is SEK 600 million higher than what we expected just 3 months ago,” stated Telia’s CEO Allison Kirkby.

Tele2

  • Telecom operator Tele2’s results for Q3 shows a higher growth than forecasted.
  • Total turnover for Q3 2022 was SEK 7,084 million, corresponding to an organic growth of 6% compared to the same period last year – slightly higher than the expected SEK 6,843 million.
  • End-user service revenue of SEK 5.1 billion, up 4% compared to Q3 2021.
  • Tele2 has not changed the projection for the full year or in medium term – the forecast is a low single-digit growth in service revenue from end customers.

Viaplay

  • Viaplay’s Q3 report shows an increase of paying subscribers of 78% YOY – mainly derived from the company’s expansion to the Netherlands, Poland, and the Baltics.
  • In the Nordics, the subscriber base grew 28% YOY, mostly driven by third party B2B distribution (B-SVOD).
  • The number of premium subscribers in Norway is growing following the inclusion of English Premier League coverage in August, but at a slower pace than the company anticipated.
  • Still, the target for organic growth was lowered from 28 percent to 20 percent and Viaplay will begin an extensive savings program in 2023 to compensate for operational challenges. The stock dropped 30% following the news.

Spotify added 7 million premium subscribers in Q3 – and rumors of a “Platinum”-tier spreads

Yesterday, Spotify announced their third quarter 2022 financial performance. The company reported 456 million monthly active users for the quarter, up 20% from the same period last year. The subscriber base grew by 13% YoY, resulting in a net addition of seven million premium subscribers. The streaming service now has a total of 195 M premium subscribers.

In terms of finances, Spotify generated EUR 3.036 billion (USD 3.06bn) in quarterly revenues in Q3, up 12% YoY. Revenues from premium subscription weighed in at €2.651 billion, up +13% YoY. Ad-supported revenues grew significantly less than premium subscription revenues and landed at €385 million, resulting in a 3% growth YoY.

Continuing the topic Spotify – rumors have surfaced regarding a new “Platinum Tier”. A Spotify subscriber who recently cancelled his subscription reportedly received a survey from the company. The survey shared details of Spotify’s upcoming subscription tiers and asked if the consumer would come back to Spotify “within the next 30 days” to sign up for one of these tiers.

The new tier presented in the survey, named “Platinum”, included HiFi audio, a headphone tuner, “Studio Sound,” “Library Pro,” “Playlist Pro,” and limited ads for podcasts. The price of “Platinum” was set at USD 19.99 per month – double the price of today’s individual Premium tier.
